FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Trout limits are common on the lower lake, with Power Bait getting most. Drew Arnold, Mission Hills, five trout totaling five pounds eight ounces on yellow Power Bait. They’re after bigger game on the upper lake. Rob Weesner, Castaic, a 15-pound striped bass on a live shad. Pat Buckley, Castaic, 13-12 striper on a K-Fin plug. No largemouth bass to speak of.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass are boiling early mornings and mid-afternoons, so surface lures are working then. A seven-pounder was caught on a crankbait. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are biting for those using live shad. A nine-pound largemouth--unusually large for this lake--tops the list. Some catfish.

LAKE PIRU--Trout fishing has picked up, and limits are fairly common for those using yellow Power Bait and Needlefish lures of various patterns. The 5-mph buoys are the most productive spots. A lot of bluegill and red-ear perch are being caught.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout are the best bet, with trollers and drifters using Needlefish and night crawlers getting most. Those using spoons at 50 feet are catching some bass. Night crawlers and mealworms are getting some red-ear perch.

CASITAS LAKE--The bass bite remains fair for mostly small fish that are biting on plastic worms and night crawlers. An occasional lunker is being caught at 25 feet. Trout action is fair. Some catfish.

IRVINE LAKE--Ten tons of trout reportedly were stocked before Thursday’s opener and as long as the lake stays cool and fairly full, the fishing should be good. Most of the fish--and people--will make their way to the west shore. A cash derby is in progress through Sunday.

CORONA LAKE--Lake officials boast that 95% of anglers caught their limits of rainbow trout during the first four days of the season last week. Of those caught, 49 weighed more than 10 pounds and nine topped 15 pounds. Top catch was a 20-pound 6-ounce rainbow by Jim Davis, Fullerton, on chartreuse Power Bait. The bite has slowed some, but is still good.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Thursday’s trout opener got off to a good start, which is no surprise. The Corona folks run the concession here too, and planted thousands of pounds of rainbows in these freeway-side ponds. Catfish are biting too.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish and bass are biting sporadically, which is a drop from the previous week. Top catch, an eight-pound bass by Dustin Stiver, San Diego, on a Castaic Bluegill lure from a float-tube.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass fishermen are still posting double-digit results. Todd Dixley, Mission Viejo, caught an 8-4 bass on a black Spider jig, but most are running two-five pounds. Catfish are active as well.

LAKE PERRIS--Trout are biting at Lots 13 and 14 on rainbow and Captain America Power Bait. The bluegill bite has slowed, but Dan Dome, San Bernardino, caught a 2 1/2-pounder on a mini-jig-cricket combo at the east end. Largemouth bass bite is fair, but the fish are small.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Trout fishermen using rainbow Power Bait and Roostertails are catching fish at a steady pace. Trollers are doing well with small Rapalas. Bass are holding in deep water off the points, biting mostly on slowly fished plastic worms. Catfish are biting at the spillway on chicken livers and anchovies.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Fishermen are few, but those braving freezing morning temperatures are catching one-five trout a day. Flasher-night crawler combos are working best, but firetiger Rapalas and Needlefish are catching some.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--The dock is closed but fishing from shore is allowed and pretty good for fair-sized trout. The lake will stay open until the first good snow or the lake ices over, whichever happens first.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Top bass, an 11-4 at Hodges, where not much else is happening. Murray has a decent trout bite.

LAKE CUYAMACA--A 12-pound largemouth bass was caught by Mike Long, Poway, on a crawdad at the west end. A 6-pound 4-ounce trout was caught by Reid Bone, Oceanside, on rainbow Power Bait at the Fox Hole. Fishing is fair at best for both species.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--12 anglers (1 boat): 32 calico bass, 4 sand bass, 2 white sea bass, 1 sculpin.

VENTURA (Harbor Village)--10 anglers (1 boat): 25 calico bass, 8 rockfish, 4 sand bass.

OXNARD (Gold Coast)--10 anglers (1 boat): 63 barracuda, 8 bonito, 2 rockfish, 8 sculpin.

PORT HUENEME--9 anglers (1 boat): 102 rock cod, 4 cow cod, 19 red snapper, 1 ocean whitefish.

MARINA DEL REY--38 anglers (3 boats): 2 halibut, 137 sculpin, 3 sand bass, 25 rock cod.

REDONDO--27 anglers (2 boats): 1 yellowtail, 2 calico bass, 33 barracuda, 1 mako shark, 2 lingcod, 9 sculpin, 1 sheephead, 10 whitefish, 80 rockfish.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--20 anglers (1 boat): 65 barracuda, 5 calico bass, 2 whitefish. (22nd St. Landing)--31 anglers (3 boats): 11 yellowtail, 1 white sea bass, 36 calico bass, 3 barracuda, 5 sand bass, 21 sculpin, 26 whitefish, 28 sheephead, 50 rockfish, 40 red snapper, 1 black sea bass (released).

LONG BEACH (Berth 55)--14 anglers (1 boat): 58 barracuda, 100 rockfish, 6 sculpin, 15 whitefish, 1 bonito. (Pierpoint Landing)--14 anglers (1 boat): 112 barracuda, 7 calico bass, 4 sheephead.
