Call Him Anything, but Never Constrained

Grahame L. Jones, in your column of Nov. 1, your remarks about Bruce Arena saying, “Right now, the language is English,” force me to surmise that you have been constrained by the politically correct cabal that runs The Times. Certainly the sophistry of your criticism of Arena is opposite to the even-handed, logical tenor of your previous reporting.

I learned from your reporting that the passionate support of soccer by Latino fans in the United States is for Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, for any team from a Spanish-speaking country, and none for the United States.

Steve Sampson’s bridge-building obviously backfired. Arena is the coach of the American national team. The language of this country is English. What a horrible mess this country has become when it takes courage to mention its language. Members of national teams are required to be citizens, and they should be expected to learn the language.
