Legislative Program Offered to Students

College graduates interested in working in the state Legislature can apply for the California Senate Associates Program, Sen. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley) announced.

Participants in the 11-month program are full-time Senate staff members working for either a senator’s Capitol office or a committee. Associates also attend seminars with senators, senior staff members, journalists, lobbyists and state government officials, for which they receive 12 graduate credits from Cal State Sacramento.

Associates are paid a monthly stipend of $1,792 plus health and dental benefits.

“The Associates Program offers an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative process,” Wright said. “Whether your career goals are in the public or private sector, the Associates Program provides valuable training.”

Students who will graduate from college by June 1999 may apply. There is no preferred major, and there is no need to be a recent graduate. Individuals with advanced degrees or those in mid-career are urged to apply.

Applications may be obtained from Wright’s office at 2345 Erringer Road, Suite 212, Simi Valley 93065, or by calling 522-2920. The deadline for submission is Feb. 18.

Eighteen associates will be selected in May after an initial screening and interview.
