EPA Grant to Fund Study of Industrial Site Cleanup
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has presented a $200,000 grant to the city to help transform contaminated industrial property that abuts Signal Hill into a sports complex.
The grant will fund a study into how to clean up contamination at the 56-acre parcel, which is owned by the city. The property has been the site of oil and gas production for decades.
The grant will pay for testing to determine if ground water in the area is contaminated and for evaluation of cleanup options, said EPA spokeswoman Lois Grunwald. It will also finance outreach programs to encourage local businesses and residents to become involved in the project.
