Council Splits in Vote to Censure Mayor Rodarte

The City Council has split over efforts to censure Mayor Edward Rodarte for having a city employee review a brochure for his business.

The council deadlocked 2-2 on Tuesday, with Rodarte abstaining.

The censure motion comes after a law firm council hired concluded in a report that Rodarte had asked a city employee to review the grammar of a brochure for his company.

Councilwoman Sally Holguin Fallon, who voted in support of Rodarte, said she would vote to censure the mayor only for “inappropriate behavior.”

Holguin Fallon said Tuesday’s motion implied that Rodarte had misappropriated city resources, which would be a crime.

Rodarte said the effort is politically motivated and claimed that he has done nothing wrong. The city employee, he said, voluntarily looked at the leaflet for his abatement company during a casual conversation.
