A busload of American senior citizens on a day trip to Mexico were injured Friday when the driver swerved to avoid another accident scene and flipped the bus on its side.

Most of the 32 passengers suffered minor injuries such as cuts and bruises, but two were in serious condition at Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine, a hospital official said.

The passengers were members of Elderhostel, a group that sponsors programs around the world for people over 55. They were en route to northern Mexico’s scenic Copper Canyon at the time of the accident.

The driver, who was unable to clearly see the accident on the road because of rain and fog, tried to swerve and tipped the bus over, said Sherry Prewitt, chief nurse executive.

The accident happened about 30 miles south of Ojinaga, a town on the U.S.-Mexico border about 200 miles southeast of El Paso.
