Indianapolis Colt fullback Craig Heyward was alert and talking after a 12-hour operation that failed to remove all of a benign brain tumor that was blurring his vision.

Heyward, listed in serious but stable condition Friday, is expected to remain in intensive care at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for several days.

The shrimp-sized tumor, known as a chordoma, was entwined with vital brain structures, said neurosurgeon Dr. Troy Payner. Doctors said they removed as much of the tumor as they could.

“Craig’s tumor is a rare, slow-growing tumor, which has the potential to reoccur or regrow after removal,” Payner said.

Heyward, 32, had complained of blurred vision in his right eye last week, prompting a series of tests that showed a tumor pressing on the optic nerve.

Most patients require further surgery and radiation treatment after the initial surgery, the hospital said.
