‘Ryan’ Didn’t Tell Why We Fought

While Gil Ferguson may have been too conservative for my taste when he was state assemblyman, I applaud his wonderful column on “Saving Private Ryan” (Orange County Voices, Nov. 8).
After seeing this mainly excellent film, I was critical of director Steven Spielberg’s lack of moral justification for U.S. involvement in World War II.
As Ferguson points out, “Ryan” was too much of men in one colored uniform killing men in another colored uniform. Spielberg [should] have made it clear that the characters in the D-day landing were fighting and dying for all that we hold dear.
Ferguson is also right on when he writes that “all Americans should try each day to make [veterans’] sacrifices meaningful in our own lives.”
