Helping Schools

On behalf of over 1,200 school-business partnerships and adopt-a-school relationships throughout LAUSD, I would like to commend The Times for its continuing commitment to our young people with its Reading by 9 program. From small businesses to large, Fortune 500 companies, providing both human and financial resources to schools has been our mission. These businesses work hard to help schools with field trips, tutoring, mentoring, pen pals, school-to-career programs, classroom support materials (supplies, books) and student, parent and teacher recognition programs, among others.

Literacy programs have been an ongoing part of many partnerships, being the impetus for various attendance, grade and citizenship programs. Yet, in the spirit of The Times’ crusade, we will initiate efforts to develop further strategies to make Partnerships for Literacy a formal support system.

To do any less, as members of the Los Angeles community, would be an abdication of our responsibility to all of our futures. We owe that to our children.
