Suspect Arrested in ‘Mummy Bandit’ Cases

A suspect in the so-called “mummy bandit” cases has been arrested on suspicion of committing six bank robberies over eight weeks in Long Beach, Garden Grove, Hawaiian Gardens and San Pedro, Long Beach police said Wednesday.

William Santos, 32, of Long Beach, was arrested Monday, detectives said. They said that in each of the robberies, the bandit entered a bank with yards of white gauze wrapped around his head and neck.

On Monday, they said, Santos--wreathed in his trademark swathing--fled with cash from a Sanwa Bank branch on Pacific Avenue in Long Beach. Bank employees called police, who stopped the suspect’s car and arrested him in a parking lot at Palm Avenue and Willow Street.
