Toledo, Phillip Fulmer of Tennessee and Bill Snyder of Kansas State, coaches of the nation’s top three teams, head the list of 10 candidates for the Walter Camp Football Foundation coach-of-the-year award.

Fulmer has led Tennessee to a 9-0 record and the No. 1 spot in both the Associated Press writers poll and the newly created bowl championship series rankings, which determine the teams that will play for the national championship in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 4.

Toledo would be on the opposite sideline from Fulmer in the Fiesta Bowl if the season ended today, having led the Bruins to a 9-0 record and the No. 2 spot in the BCS rankings.

Others under consideration are Barry Alvarez of Wisconsin, Tommy Bowden of Tulane, Mack Brown of Texas, Fisher DeBerry of Air Force, Bob Davie of Notre Dame, Houston Nutt of Arkansas and Dick Tomey of Arizona.

Lloyd Carr, who led Michigan to a share of the national championship last season, won the 1997 award.

This year’s winner will be announced on Feb. 27, 1999, following a vote by a panel of Division I-A coaches and sports information directors.
