Guard’s Family Creates Fund to Pay Medical Bills

A security guard who tried to catch a suicidal woman who jumped from a Sherman Oaks Galleria parking garage, was still in critical condition Friday with a broken neck, and his family set up a fund to pay his medical bills.

Conrad Buchanan’s act of heroism may have paralyzed him, relatives said.

Buchanan, a 26-year-old father of two daughters, was conscious Friday, but unable to speak because of feeding tubes obstructing his throat.

The jumper--Julie Light, 68, of Camarillo--died. Norma Buchanan, the guard’s mother, said Light’s family has kept in contact with her to monitor Conrad Buchanan’s condition.

Norma Buchanan said she was grateful for their support and the support of the dozens of people who have expressed sympathy for her son’s condition. “We really feel blessed,” said Conrad Buchanan’s sister, Melva.

Despite Buchanan’s grave condition, the family remained optimistic that he would recover. “We have faith God is going to pull him through,” said Norma Buchanan. “Miracles do happen.”

The family said contributions to help pay the guard’s medical bills can be sent to Conrad Buchanan Donations, P.O. Box 7362, Los Angeles 90007.
