Two cargo planes carrying supplies for hurricane-stricken Central America left the Channel Islands Air National Guard Station on Saturday, the latest in several disaster-relief missions by the 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard.

Bound for Soto Cano, Honduras, two C-130 aircraft left the Channel Islands station with relief supplies collected and sorted by California Army Guard and Air National Guard personnel, as well as other relief agencies.

The Air National Guard began flying to Honduras last week and on Friday completed its seventh mission. The aircraft flew from Port Hueneme to military staging areas at Norfolk, Va., and Gulfport, Miss., to pick up food, medical supplies and construction materials and equipment.

From there, crews from the 146th flew the supplies to Honduras, with one crew stopping in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to pick up a five-ton truck for use in transporting relief supplies.

Also, a team from the 146th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron will leave Port Hueneme soon for San Salvador. The team of six includes communications and radio technicians, a nurse and other personnel from the medical service corps. They will remain in San Salvador until just before Christmas.
