Clarence N. Bristol; Retired GTE Manager

Newbury Park resident Clarence N. Bristol died Wednesday at a local hospital following several years of heart problems. He was 71.

Bristol was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Grand Rapids, Mich. He grew up in Muskegon, Mich., where he met his wife-to-be, Marjorie. The couple wed March 12, 1949, and would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1999.

Bristol worked as a manager for General Telephone for 40 years, during which he was transferred to several states, including Indiana and Washington.

In 1971, Bristol and his family moved from Seattle to Newbury Park. After retiring from General Telephone in 1983, he worked part time as a manager for United Way’s Southern California campaign.

Bristol was a docent for the historical Stagecoach Inn in Newbury Park, and he was a past president of the Independent Telephone Pioneer’s Assn. He volunteered for Junior Achievement and Boy Scouts of America.

Bristol enjoyed bridge and played golf occasionally before the onset of his heart trouble.

In addition to his wife, Marjorie Bristol of Newbury Park, Bristol is survived by one son, Marc Bristol of Seattle; two daughters, Betsy Brown of Sonora and Wendy Kappen of Thousand Oaks; two brothers, Bob Bristol of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Byron Bristol of Arkansas; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Saturday at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary in Westlake Village. Interment will be private.

The family suggests donations be made to a person’s favorite charity.
