Topanga Canyon Reverie

Share

I was considerably moved by Tara Ison’s “Home, Sweet Mobile Home” essay (Oct. 18), experiencing both poignant reflection and bemused enjoyment. In talking about her expectations of life in Topanga, she passed along the stereotypes that many Angelenos have about that community. It made me stop and think about the many assumptions that I have about L.A.’s communities--and how limiting those assumptions are.

My morning commute through the canyon has become a vividly scented adventure--patchouli and wild mustard, barbecue, goats and Old Spice. And all this time I thought it was just a nice ride in the country.
