A suspected gang member was left to die of gunshot wounds in an alley behind an apartment complex early Sunday morning, police said.

Patrol officers responded to a “shots fired” call at 3:05 a.m. in the 11100 block of Sherman Way, near Tujunga Avenue, and found a young man shot several times in the chest, according to Det. Mike Coffey of the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division.

Paramedics pronounced the 26-year-old man dead at the scene.

The motive for the killing was not known, but the victim had gang tattoos, and investigators are exploring whether the shooting was sparked by gang rivalries.
