Hurricane Mitch

Share

* Has anybody given thought to the migration of Central Americans to the Los Angeles area in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch?

Although these are not people who have thought about coming to Los Angeles, their circumstances are dire, many of them having nothing to go back to. Others have lost all their family members in Central America and cling to the hope that a distant relative in Los Angeles will give them shelter. They are compelled to find better living conditions, and Los Angeles, even with the strains we face, does offer such conditions. If for no other reason, they will come here, make and save some money and then go back to rebuild.

Are we prepared to absorb this influx? Do we realize that many of them will not find employment once they arrive and, for the first time, Los Angeles will have homeless Central Americans in its streets?
