Key to a Happy Holiday: Taking Your Time
You can go home again, travel experts say, just take your time.
The traditional race for airports, freeway onramps, train depots and bus terminals begins today, the start of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Transportation officials urge travelers to exercise caution as they leave town on what is generally recognized as the busiest travel day of the year.
“It’s more important to get there than to get there fast,” said Carol Thorp, an Automobile Club of Southern California spokeswoman. “Our message to travelers is: ‘Drive alert and arrive alive, and do all the things you need to do to make that happen.’ ”
Airport officials across Southern California are reminding passengers to arrive at terminals at least an hour before a domestic flight and two hours before an international flight. Passengers should carry picture identification cards.
About 1.5 million travelers are expected at Los Angeles International Airport today through Sunday. At Orange County’s John Wayne Airport, 24,000 travelers are expected.
Drivers will pay less at the pump than they did last Thanksgiving weekend. Average gasoline prices are down 25 cents per gallon.
Weather in Los Angeles will feature blue skies and mild temperatures throughout the weekend, forecasters said.
