Star Treatment--Observe the wonders of the night sky at a Dec. 8 “planet party” hosted by the astronomy department at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. Eight high-powered telescopes will be aimed at Jupiter, Saturn, the moon, star clusters and other sights from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Professors, technicians and astronomy students will be available to answer questions and help scope out the best views. Real-time images from the college’s observatory will also be transmitted to screens in the science and math building’s lobby and study area. Parking is free in lots 10 and 12. Gray Matter--In preparation for the whale-watching season that begins in January, the Orange County chapter of the American Cetacean Society will present a program called “Ecology and Natural History of the Gray Whale.” It takes place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Costa Mesa Community Center, 1845 Park Ave. (714) 534-5177.

Nature Break--During winter vacation, children ages 7 to 10 can explore science and nature at the Oak Canyon Nature Center. “Nature Detectives” is the focus the first week, Dec. 21-24, and topics include tracking through the canyon, creatures of the night and a journey to the microscopic world. “Jaws and Claws,” Dec. 28-31, covers big cats of the canyon, ravenous raptors and insect predators. “Dirt to Dinosaurs,” Jan. 4-8, looks at long necks and three-horns, the tar pits and living fossils. Activities include trail walks, games, crafts, experiments and live animal presentations. Hours are 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $8 per daily class and preregistration is recommended.
