WASHINGTON STATE (3-1) at No. 4 UCLA (2-0)

Share

* Kickoff: 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Channel 7.

* Story line: UCLA returns to action after the unscheduled bye, and Washington State returns to the Rose Bowl, site of its heartbreaking loss to Michigan on Jan. 1. This is also the start of conference play for the Bruins. The Cougars opened with a loss last weekend at California.

* UCLA update: After playing Texas and Houston, teams it beat badly last season, the Bruins are the team seeking revenge. The 1997 loss in Pullman, also in the Pac-10 opener, turned out to be what cost the Bruins a Jan. 1 trip to Pasadena. “We’ll take that into the game,” tailback Jermaine Lewis said.

* Washington State update: The young Cougars should age quickly. Victories over Illinois, Boise State and Idaho gave way to a 10-point defeat to Cal, and now comes a run through the conference gantlet: at No. 4 UCLA, No. 17 Oregon, No. 21 USC, dangerous Arizona State and at No. 14 Arizona. The only break in there is a bye, between the Trojans and Sun Devils.

* Edge to UCLA: But do the Bruins put together four solid quarters for the first time?

* Line: UCLA by 23.
