Wilson Pulls Away From Edison, 64-34

The floodgates opened early for Long Beach Wilson, and Edison could not stop the flow in a 64-34 loss Friday night at Wilson.

Carlos Velasquez returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and the Bruins never trailed the rest of the way.

Velasquez had four touchdowns and 232 yards of total offense. “We’ve been practicing hard and came out with a game plan,” Velasquez said. “I knew as soon as I ran the first kick back that we were going to win.”

The teams traded touchdowns in the first half like heavyweights in a title bout. Each time Wilson (2-2) scored, the Chargers (3-1) answered. Darin Pope countered the first three Bruin touchdowns with scores from 16, 31 and one yard, but Wilson kept pounding the ball into the end zone and eventually wore down the Edison defense.

Randy Gaither ran 60 yards for the first of his two touchdowns, and Omar Issa followed with a 33-yard touchdown run. Consecutive Wilson touchdowns gave the Bruins a 36-26 halftime lead.

Chris Lahera scored a touchdown on a 25-yard pass from David Battle to begin the third quarter. Lahera later added a 46-yard touchdown reception from Battle, who completed eight of 13 passes for 194 yards. Lahera finished with six catches for 173 yards.

Edison outgained Wilson, 497-489, but wasn’t able to keep it that close on the scoreboard. Pope gained 129 yards in 26 carries.

Jason Kripavicius threw for 368 yards on 19 of 42 passing. Jeff Kadau had 10 receptions for 215 yards and one touchdown.

“We just couldn’t score at crucial times,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “They outplayed us.”
