Arizona Wants Revenge

Arizona is putting its pride and an eight-game winning streak on the line tonight against Washington in Seattle.

The Wildcats were embarrassed, 58-28, by the Huskies last season, but No. 14 Arizona (4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference) has a chance to get even against the No. 20 Huskies (2-1, 1-0).

A year ago at Tucson, Washington rolled up 472 yards, forced three turnovers and scored the most points ever by a Pac-10 team against Arizona.

“We were humiliated,” Arizona defensive lineman Joe Tafoya said. “We don’t want to stand for that any more.”

Said Wildcat quarterback Keith Smith: “I’m looking to go up and have a great time this time.”

If the Wildcats, who have not won in Seattle since 1988, can get past the Huskies, they’ll have a lot of momentum going into their Oct. 10 home game against No. 4 UCLA.

Washington might be psychologically damaged as well as physically hurting. The Huskies are coming off a 55-7 loss at No. 2 Nebraska in a game that cost them the services of tailback Maurice Shaw and wide receiver Gerald Harris. Both will be sidelined tonight because of injuries.

Washington Coach Jim Lambright is optimistic his team can erase the memories of the Nebraska loss.

“It’s extremely important for this team to come back and get its confidence back,” he said.

It will be the third night game in the history of Husky Stadium.

Last year, Notre Dame was desperate for a victory against Stanford after starting 1-3.

It didn’t happen, and the Irish hit bottom with a 33-16 loss to the then-No. 19 Cardinal before rallying to finish 7-5 and earn a bowl berth.

This time, it’s Stanford with its bowl hopes already starting to fade behind a 1-3 record and facing a ranked opponent.

“The motivation for us is we need to win, and it doesn’t matter when or where,” Stanford Coach Tyrone Willingham said.

The No. 23 Irish (2-1) don’t have much breathing room, either. After beating Michigan, losing to Michigan State and edging Purdue, Notre Dame is searching for a consistent effort.

“We can’t come out with a lackadaisical attitude against Stanford,” Irish wide receiver Malcolm Johnson said.

That means the defense will to have to put together a solid first half. So far, the Irish have given up an average of 273 yards in the first half, and their overall defensive average of 435 yards per game ranks 97th nationally.

Stanford might be playing without wide receiver Troy Walters, who has sat out the last two games because of a high ankle sprain and is listed as questionable.

There’s no secret to the approach No. 12 Georgia (3-0, 1-0 in the SEC) and No. 6 Louisiana State (3-0, 1-0) plan to take into their game today at Baton Rouge, La.

The Bulldogs will attack down the middle after watching Auburn and Idaho gain big yardage against the Tigers.

LSU will try to get its offense rolling against a Georgia defense that has given up only five points a game.

Hoyt “Wu” Winslett, an All-American end who played on Alabama’s 1926 Rose Bowl championship team, died at 94.

Winslett was the school’s oldest letterman and a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. He will be remembered with a moment of silence before today’s Alabama-Florida game in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
