Three County Teams Win at Stanford Event

The Katella and Newport Harbor boys’ cross-country teams and the Santa Margarita girls’ team each won titles Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.

Katella won the Division I boys’ title and Newport Harbor won in Division II. Santa Margarita won the Division II girls’ title.

Esperanza’s Ryan Bousquet finished seventh in the Division I boys’ race in 15 minutes 58 seconds on the 3.1-mile course at Stanford Park. Katella’s Juan Casas finished 11th in 16:03. In Division II, Newport Harbor’s Curt Herberts finished second in 16:08 to lead the Sailors. Trabuco Hills’ Evan Geisert finished ninth in 16:33.

In the girls’ Division II race, Santa Margarita won with with 73 points. Second-place Newport Harbor had 138. Lori Mann finished second in 18:58 for Santa Margarita.

Amber Steen finished sixth in 19:39 and Alicia McFall seventh in 19:39 for Newport Harbor.

In a boys’ cross-country meet:

Estancia wins--Alberto Munoz, Manuel Orozco and Tony Magana finished first, second and third to lift Estancia to a team victory at the Yucaipa Invitational. Munoz won in 15 minutes 34 seconds.

In the Villa Park boys’ water polo tournament:

La Jolla Bishop’s 15, El Toro 6--Tim Craycraft scored two goals and goalkeeper Doug Brown made 16 saves for El Toro (13-5) in the title game.

El Toro advanced to the championship game with an 8-6 semifinal victory over San Clemente.

Katella 11, Santa Margarita 5--Jeff Pratt and Brian Wersky each scored three goals and Brandon Avila had eight saves for Katella (10-2) in the consolation final.

Marina 16, Esperanza 7--Justin Fassnacht led the Vikings with eight goals and three assists for Marina in a consolation game. Jeff Larson had five steals and four goals and goaltender Mark Armstrong had 15 saves for Marina (8-2).

Vista Rancho Buena Vista 10, Costa Mesa 9--Hunter Taylor scored five goals for Costa Mesa (6-6) in the consolation round. Mike Whitman’s goal with 1:39 left in the fourth tied the score, 9-9, for the Mustangs. Rancho Buena Vista scored the game-winner with 40 seconds left in the game.

In the Ritz Carlton Invitational girls’ tennis tournament:

Corona del Mar 4, Woodbridge 3--Courtney Tenerelli and Ruchika Budhraja led Corona del Mar with an 8-4 doubles victory in the championships.
