McClung Goes to Mexico City to Discuss Arrest
Newport Beach skipper Scott McClung, released from custody in Mexico last month, on Wednesday flew to Mexico City to meet with officials to discuss his arrest and detention.
McClung, 36, was taken into custody Aug. 10 in Cozumel, a resort island on the Yucatan Peninsula, on charges of violating Mexican weapons laws when authorities found two AR-15 semiautomatic rifles and three shotguns on his $4.5-million boat, the Rapture.
The charges were later dismissed.
McClung is expected to meet with Mexican Atty. Gen. Jorge Madraso today. According to McClung’s attorneys, he also will meet with the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Jeffrey Davidow, as well as officials from the President’s National Commission on Human Rights to discuss his treatment at the hands of the Mexican authorities who detained him until Sept. 18.
McClung has charged that Mexican prosecutor Claudio Sanchez Torres sought a $10,000 bribe to keep him out of prison. McClung’s attorneys said Wednesday that they expect to participate informally in the ongoing investigation of Torres. Torres has denied the allegations.
