Malibu Plans to Keep Park in Natural State

A sprawling park in the hills of western Malibu will remain largely untouched if the city acquires it from Los Angeles County, city officials said.

Council members voted last week to ask the county Board of Supervisors for a deed restriction that would prohibit development of recreational facilities such as swimming pools or playing fields at Charmlee County Park, said City Manager Harry Peacock.

The city manages the 100-acre-plus park and has been working with the county for years to acquire it, Peacock said.

Joel Bellman, a spokesman for County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, said the supervisor expects that ownership of Charmlee will be transferred to the City of Malibu by the end of the month.

The park contains trails, picnic tables, restrooms and a parking lot.

Malibu intends to hire a consultant to complete a master plan for city parks and recreational facilities.
