Costa Mesa Turns On Blitz, Sacks Winless Anaheim, 30-0

Costa Mesa’s defense made it look easy Friday at Glover Stadium, holding Anaheim to minus-39 yards on offense in a 30-0 nonleague victory. It was the 16th consecutive loss for Anaheim.

Jimmy Herzog rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns in 23 carries and also returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown for Costa Mesa (3-2).

Costa Mesa’s defense blitzed all night and recorded nine sacks. Quarterback Johnny Aguilera completed two of 13 passes for nine yards for Anaheim (0-5).

In another nonleague game:

University 22, Saddleback 22--With three minutes remaining, Sal Pedroza completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Romeo, then completed the two-point conversion pass to Emmanuel Pedroza to tie it for Saddleback (1-3-1).

Andy Dennis scored earlier in the fourth on a six-yard run to give University (2-2-1), which failed on the two-point conversion, a 22-14 lead.

Reggie Edwards had a 65-yard touchdown run in the first half for University.

In Express League football:

Redlands Calvary Chapel 56, Liberty Christian 38--The teams were tied, 32-32, after three quarters before Calvary Chapel’s Joseph Rodriguez scored two of his four touchdowns in a 24-point spree.

Rodriguez and R.J. Ross combined for 229 yards rushing and five touchdowns for Calvary Chapel (3-2, 2-0).

C.J. Leeman completed 18 of 34 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns and also scored on a one-yard run with 2:30 left in the first half to tie it, 32-32, for Liberty Christian (2-3, 0-3).

In the Clovis Invitational boys’ cross-country meet:

Escobar wins--Villa Park’s Augie Escobar finished first in a field of 186 runners at Fresno’s Woodward Park.

Escobar finished the 3.1-mile race in 15 minutes 35 seconds to help the Spartans finish third in the team competition with 196 points. Saugus won with 105 points and Clovis Buchanan (153) was second.

In the girls’ meet:

Brea finishes third--Sophomore Jenny Thune finished sixth in 19:10 over the 3.1-mile course at Woodward Park for Brea Olinda, which had 127 points. Thousand Oaks won with 79 points and Grass Valley (Calif.) Nevada Union (93) was third.
