No. 5 Kansas State Holds on for 13th Consecutive Victory

Eric Hickson ran for 137 yards, Martin Gramatica kicked three field goals and No. 5 Kansas State withstood a late Colorado rally to defeat the No. 14 Buffaloes, 16-9, Saturday at Boulder, Colo.

The Wildcats (5-0, 2-0 in Big 12) posted their 13th consecutive victory, equaling a school record.

Gramatica’s third field goal, a 41-yarder early in the fourth quarter, gave Kansas State a 16-0 lead. But the Buffaloes (5-1, 1-1) made a late rally with a five-yard touchdown pass from Mike Moschetti to Marcus Stiggers and a 20-yard field goal from Jeremy Aldrich.

EAST

With Heisman Trophy hopeful Amos Zereoue sidelined with a thigh injury, backup Alvin Swoope rushed for a career-high 141 yards and two touchdowns--all in the first half--as No. 16 West Virginia crushed Temple, 37-7, in a Big East matchup at Philadelphia. Swoope gained 45 yards on the second play of the game and scored on runs of one and seven yards to lead the Mountaineers (4-1, 1-0) over the Owls (0-6, 0-2). . . . Donovan McNabb threw four touchdown passes in the first half to lead No. 24 Syracuse (3-2) to a 63-21 nonconference win over Cincinnati (0-6) at Syracuse, N.Y. . . . Defensive back Glenn Jackson returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter to give Harvard (1-3, 1-1 Ivy League) a 19-12 victory over Cornell (2-2, 1-1) at Boston. . . . Craig Foote scored on a 40-yard fumble return and John Burnham threw a 51-yard scoring pass to lead Princeton (2-2, 2-0 Ivy League) to a 31-17 victory over Brown (1-3, 0-2) at Princeton. . . . Mike Rader three three touchdown passes to lead Pennsylvania (3-1) to a 34-31 nonconference win over Fordham (2-3) at New York. . . . Yale quarterback Joe Walland rushed for 95 yards and passed for another 125 to lead the Elis (2-2) to a 15-7 nonconference win over Holy Cross (2-3) at New Haven, Conn. . . . Quarterback Ryan Vena ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Colgate to a 45-24 nonconference win over Dartmouth at Hamilton, N.Y.

MIDWEST

Ricky Williams moved into third place on the NCAA’s career rushing list with 139 yards and two touchdowns and Major Applewhite threw touchdown passes to lead Texas to a 34-3 pounding of Oklahoma at Dallas. The Longhorns (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) enjoyed their biggest victory in the 98-year-old series since winning 41-9 in 1970. The Sooners (2-3, 0-2) scored their fewest points against Texas since losing 19-0 in 1965. . . . Devin West ran for 252 yards and Corby Jones accounted for three scores to lead No. 21 Missouri to a 35-19 win over Iowa State at Ames, Iowa. Missouri (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) capitalized on a muffed punt and an interception for touchdowns and hurt Iowa State (2-4, 0-3) with West, whose rushing total was the second-best in Missouri history. . . . Travis Prentice ran for two touchdowns to set a Mid-American Conference rushing record and lead Miami of Ohio (4-1, 2-0) a 24-12 victory over Bowling Green (1-4, 1-1) at Oxford, Ohio. . . . Chester Taylor ran for 182 yards and scored two touchdowns in his first start to lead Toledo (3-3, 2-1 MAC) to a 27-6 win over Ball State (1-5, 1-3) at Toledo, Ohio.

Peter Warrick caught a 62-yard scoring pass and set up William McCray’s touchdown run with a 50-yard catch as No. 8 Florida State defeated Miami for the fourth consecutive year, 26-14, at Miami. Warrick finished with 190 yards on seven catches as the Seminoles (5-1) extended their longest streak over Miami (3-2) since winning seven in a row from 1963-72. . . . Jason Bostic scored on a blocked punt and fumble return and Joe Hamilton added three touchdowns as Georgia Tech used a 28-point second quarter to upset No. 23 North Carolina State, 47-24, at Raleigh, N.C. Hamilton completed 15 of 22 passes for 236 yards for the Yellow Jackets (4-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). North Carolina State (3-2, 1-1) had to play the second half without quarterback Jamie Barnette, who left the game with a concussion. . . . Oscar Davenport completed a 44-yard scoring pass to Na Brown on North Carolina’s first possession of the second half to spark a 29-10 nonconference victory over Pittsburgh at Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels (2-3) held the Panthers (2-3) to 48 yards rushing and 181 yards total offense. . . . Brandon Streeter passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns to lead Clemson (2-4, 1-3 ACC) to a 23-0 victory over Maryland (2-4, 0-3) at Clemson, S.C. . . . Ty Amey rushed for three touchdowns to lead Army (2-3, 2-1 Conference USA) to a 38-28 win over Houston (1-5, 1-1) at Houston. . . . Terrell Bush’s one-yard touchdown run with 49 seconds left capped a 17-point rally in the fourth quarter to give Baylor (2-3, 1-2 Big 12) a 31-24 victory over Kansas (2-4, 0-4) at Waco, Tex. . . . Rob Peters threw two touchdown passes to Donnie Hart to lead Texas Tech (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) to a 24-17 victory over Oklahoma State (2-3, 1-2) at Lubbock, Tex. . . . Sims Lenhardt kicked four field goals, including a 32-yarder with 1:50 left, to help Duke (3-3, 1-3) end the ACC’s longest losing streak with a 19-16 victory over Wake Forest (2-3, 1-1) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

David Silberstein kicked a 24-yard field goal with 51 seconds remaining and San Jose State (3-3, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) held on for a 20-17 victory over Rice (1-4, 1-1) at San Jose. . . . Texas Christian’s Kendrick Patterson returned a fumble 29 yards for a touchdown to seal a 21-10 win for the Horned Frogs (4-1, 2-0 WAC) over Fresno State (1-4, 1-1) at Fort Worth, Texas. . . .

Backup quarterback Rocky Perez’s three-yard touchdown pass to Keonta Golson with 19 seconds left and two missed field goals by New Mexico (2-4, 0-3 WAC) in the final two seconds gave Texas-El Paso (1-4, 1-1) a 22-19 victory at Albuquerque, N.M. . . . Cale Bonds, making just his second career start, ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns to lead Air Force to a 49-7 victory over Navy at Air Force, Colo. Bonds added touchdown passes of 22 and 46 yards as Air Force (5-1) took the first step toward retaining the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy coveted by the three U.S. military academies. Navy (1-4) has not swept both Air Force and Army since 1981. . . . Kevin Feterik threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns to lead Brigham Young to a 38-14 win over Nevada-Las Vegas at Provo, Utah. Brigham Young (3-3, 1-1 WAC) held the Rebels (0-6, 0-2) to 13 yards of total offense and one first down in the first three quarters. . . . Fourth-string running back Dun Ruff scored on an 80-yard touchdown run the first time he touched the ball to ignite Colorado State (5-2, 3-1 WAC) to a 34-7 victory over Tulsa (2-3, 0-2) at Fort Collins, Colo.

SOUTHLAND

Freshman Marcus Brady threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns to lead Cal State Northridge to a 21-7 victory over Montana at Northridge. “It was a phenomenal win for our program,” Northridge Coach Ron Ponciano said. “I did not think that it would be such a low-scoring win but our defense played extremely well.” It was the ninth consecutive home win for Northridge (4-1, 3-0 Big Sky) and its first over Montana (3-3, 1-2).
