Candy Maker Pulls Its Ads From Controversial Comedy

Mars Inc., the makers of M&Ms;, has pulled commercials for the candy from UPN’s controversial Civil War comedy, “The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer.”

James E. Conlan, external affairs director for the company, notified Brotherhood Crusade President Danny Bakewell of the withdrawal last week after Bakewell contacted him and other advertisers that had placed commercials in the Oct. 5 premiere.

Several black leaders have launched a campaign to get the series off the air, saying it makes light of slavery. The show revolves around a black butler who is an advisor to President Abraham Lincoln.

No reason for the Mars decision was cited, and Conlan could not be reached for comment.

UPN executives said it is their policy not to comment on business matters.
