Fourth-seeded Esther Vergeer of the Netherlands upset Maaike Smit, also of the Netherlands, to advance to today’s final of the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships at the Racquet Club of Irvine. Vergeer, making her first U.S. Open final appearance, defeated second-seeded Smit, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, and will face defending champion and top-ranked Daniela DiToro of Australia.

In men’s singles, Australia’s David Hall will defend his title, after defeating Austria’s Martin Legner, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), in a semifinal. Hall, the top-ranked player in the world, will play the winner of today’s semifinal between Ricky Molier (Netherlands) and Steve Welch (Austin, Tex.).

Miscellany

. Tickets will go on sale today for the John Wooden Classic and the Wooden High School Invitational at the Arrowhead Pond. The fifth annual Wooden Classic will feature UCLA against Oklahoma State and Kansas against Pepperdine on Dec. 5.
