UCI’s Seymour Reaches Final of Tennis Event

UC Irvine freshman Jonni Seymour upset No. 1-seeded Maggie Cole of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-4, Saturday in the semifinals of the UCI/Atrium Fall women’s tennis invitational.

Cole is ranked No. 75 in the country. Seymour plays San Diego State’s Sarah Donovan at 9 a.m. today at the UCI Tennis Stadium. For the second straight year, UCI is sending a freshman to the final. UCI’s Darian Chappell won the tournament last year.

In the UC San Diego cross-country invitational:

UC Irvine women win--The Anteaters won the women’s team title with 42 points. USC was second with 50 and Concordia third with 88.

Christy Villa finished third in 17 minutes 59 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to lead Irvine.

Irvine men take second--The Irvine men’s team finished second with 78 points to UCLA’s first-place total of 23. Cal Baptist was third with 122 points and Fullerton fourth with 145.

The Bruins’ Mark Hauser won the 8,000-meter race in 24:09. Chris Evans was eighth in 25:47 to lead the Anteaters.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Nevada 3, UC Irvine 1--Tandie Wade had 11 kills and 12 digs for UC Irvine, which lost, 15-11, 15-0, 12-15, 15-9. The last time UCI (7-15, 3-5) was shut out in a game was in 1989 against San Diego. Nevada improves to 16-3, 6-2.
