Manager to Be Hired After Fall Election

City Council members have delayed selection of a new city manager until after the Nov. 3 election.

“Quite frankly, I don’t know if I want someone who’s not going to be here to be making the decision about the city manager,” Mayor Michael Markey said. “I don’t want to stop the city government from running just because of the election, but it’s the people who get elected who will have to work with whoever gets hired.”

Three seats on the five-member council are up for grabs in the election. Incumbents Andy Fox and Judy Lazar are seeking reelection, while Councilwoman Elois Zeanah is not seeking another term.

Grant Brimhall, who served as city manager for 20 years, retired in February. His longtime deputy, MaryJane Lazz, is filling in on an interim basis while the city searches for a replacement.

After the election, council members are expected to conduct initial interviews with finalists for the job before scheduling second interviews and background checks.

The council could make a decision by the end of the year or early next year.
