UCI to Break Ground on Student Rec Center
UC Irvine will break ground Wednesday for a student recreation center on its east campus.
The 92,000-square-foot center, scheduled for a fall 1999 opening, will serve as a “central park” for a resident student community that is expanding as enrollment rises, officials said.
It will include sports and fitness facilities.
“It is important that we provide an environment that encourages students to become well-rounded individuals,” said Chancellor Ralph J. Cicerone, who will be among those speaking at Wednesday’s ceremony. Also speaking at the event, set for 3 to 5 p.m., will be campus Recreation Director Jill Schindele. Site tours and refreshments will be available.
