Northridge Loses Egan, Mellinger

Infielder Brent Egan and outfielder Kevin Mellinger of Oxnard College will not attend Cal State Northridge at the semester break, freeing scholarship money for Matador Coach Mike Batesole.

Egan and Mellinger, both highly regarded Royal High products, could have transferred to Northridge had they completed their associate degrees this fall. However, neither is enrolled in school.

“They were both going to get major chunks of money,” Batesole said. “We’ll see who is left to get when fall practices end.”

BOXING

Done deal: Fernando Vargas of Oxnard has signed to fight Yory Boy Campas (72-2) for the International Boxing Federation junior-middleweight championship Dec. 12 in Atlantic City.

Vargas, who turns 21 on Dec. 7, would become the youngest IBF junior-middlweight champion in history.

The fight will be televised on HBO.

Country Club bouts: Lightweights Ricky Quiles of Puerto Rico and Margarito Navarro of Sonora, Mexico, will fight an eight-round semi-main event Thursday at the Reseda Country Club.

Orlando Canizales, former world bantamweight champion, will fight Tomas Valdez of Tijuana in a 10-round main event. Former NFL running back Alonzo Highsmith will fight Bill Corrigan in a four-round heavyweight bout. Corrigan replaces Carl Chancellor, who suffered a hand injury.

Scheduled on the undercard are heavyweight Victor Ortiz of Simi Valley, middleweight Eddie Gutierrez of Palmdale and lightweight Effi Schneider of Los Angeles. A woman’s bout is scheduled between Paula Faye of Big Bear and Pam Barker of Las Vegas.

Matadors fall: Dezeray Dougherty’s goal in the sixth minute of overtime gave Eastern Washington (3-9, 3-1) a 1-0 victory over Cal State Northridge (5-11, 2-2) on Sunday in a Big Sky Conference game at North Campus Stadium.

TENNIS

Doubles winners: Tiffany Brymer of Rio Mesa High was the only double winner from the region Sunday in the 96th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Doubles Championships at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Brymer and partner Abigail Spears of Valley Center were the top-seeded team in the girls’ 18 doubles division. They defeated second-seeded Kelly Ramirez and Stacey Tomkiewicz of Rancho Palos Verdes, 6-0, 7-5, in the final.

Brymer and Carl McCafferty of Highland, top-seeded in 18 mixed doubles, defeated second-seeded Ashley Backus of San Diego and Ryan Haymond of Bakersfield, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the final.

In mixed doubles, second-seeded Prakash Amritraj of Encino and partner Luana Magnani of Pasadena rallied to win the 16 mixed doubles final, upsetting top-seeded K.C. Corkery of Manhattan Beach and Arpi Kojian of Santa Ana, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Amritraj’s cousin, Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas, and partner Ashley Maddocks of Laguna Beach were top-seeded and won the 14 mixed doubles title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over fourth-seeded Daniel Andrus of Fallbrook and Kristen Grady of Murrieta.

Also winning were Kristen McVitty of Woodland Hills and Steven Forman of Del Mar in the 10 mixed doubles.
