Keith Primeau scored for the third time in four games and goaltender Arturs Irbe beat his former team as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vancouver Canucks, 3-1, Tuesday night at Greensboro, N.C.

The Hurricanes, who lost their season opener, had three home ties before finally winning.

Irbe began the season as the backup to Trevor Kidd after being signed as a free agent in September from the Canucks. But with Kidd struggling, Irbe has started the last three games. He has taken advantage of his playing time, allowing only four goals in his last 11 periods.

Dallas 3, Calgary 1--Darryl Sydor had two goals and an assist to lead the Stars over the Flames at Dallas.

The Stars are unbeaten at home (3-0-0), and Sydor has at least one point in each of Dallas’ first five games, matching the longest scoring streak of his career. Sydor had a five-game streak for the Kings in 1993-94.

New York Rangers 3, Edmonton 2--Mathieu Schneider scored a power-play goal 8:38 into the third period as the Rangers (1-4-1) beat the Oilers at New York to avoid matching their worst start in 40 years.

The Rangers, outscored, 17-7, in their first five games, won despite having a goal by Wayne Gretzky waved off.

Philadelphia 3, San Jose 1--Eric Lindros and Rod Brind’Amour each had a goal and an assist as the unbeaten Flyers defeated the winless Sharks at Philadelphia.

Colin Forbes broke a 1-1 tie with a third-period goal.
