500 Expected at UCI Religious Faire
UC Irvine’s fifth annual Religious Diversity Faire will be from noon to 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the student center.
The “Religion and Spirituality” event will feature speakers representing 19 faiths in 39 workshops on such topics as “Native American Spirituality,” “Religion in the Public Schools,” “Reaching God Through Song and Story,” “Islamic Spirituality,” “A Woman’s Place” and “Living a Spiritual Life.”
Attendees are also invited to experience a long-forgotten mystical tradition by walking a full-size replica of the labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France. Also planned are a Christian Taize worship service, yoga, sacred storytelling and devotional chanting.
The fair, the largest of its kind in the western U.S., is designed to promote understanding among all religions, according to Rabbi Allen Krause, event founder and spiritual leader at Temple Beth El in Aliso Viejo.
Last year’s fair drew 450 people. This year, about 500 are expected.
Cost is $12 for advance registration and $14 Sunday. Students with identification can buy tickets for $5 at the door. Information: (714) 668-9191.
