Schools Launch Anti-Drug Campaign
In what has become a nationwide tradition, students are donning red ribbons this week to mark their annual campaign against the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
Observances of Red Ribbon Week at local schools start this week and continue through Oct. 31.
In Ventura, a school board proclamation declared that substance abuse “has reached pandemic stages in California and throughout the nation.”
The board encouraged all residents to pin on red ribbons as a show of support for the schools’ efforts.
At Las Colinas School in Camarillo, students were to participate in symbolic exercises about the dangers of tobacco. A huge cigarette suspended over the school underscored the point.
At Somis School, Red Ribbon Week kicked off with a presentation by Covenant Players.
Throughout the week, the school will offer wristbands and stickers advocating healthy lifestyles as well as competitions among students and teachers for the best costume and popcorn-bag decorations.
