The Offenses

UCLA has scored at least 40 points in all five games, the longest such streak in school history. At 46.6 points an outing, the Bruins are well ahead of team-record pace, almost four points better than the 42.7 from the 1973 team with Kermit Johnson and James McAlister. The 161 yards receiving last week by Danny Farmer were ninth best in UCLA history.

The Defenses

For the third week in a row, UCLA will face a well-regarded unit. California is No. 1 in the Pac-10 in scoring defense (18.7 points a game), in total defense and passing defense. The only bend comes against the run, where the Bears are No. 8--encouraging news for a Bruin team without DeShaun Foster and looking to get Jermaine Lewis back on track after his 15 yards in seven carries last week. The Bears have performed much better in the second half, giving up three touchdowns after intermission, and only one in the fourth quarter. In 16 second-half drives the last two weeks, USC and Washington have punted 10 times, committed four turnovers, been caught for a safety and given the ball up on downs. The Bruins’ Kenyon Coleman will return to first-string end.

Key to the game: The reshuffled UCLA secondary, with help on coverage and quarterback pressure from the linebackers and the defensive line. If the Bruins shut down the Cal passing attack, they shut down Cal. The Bears average a dismal 72.7 yards rushing.

Fast fact: The 395 yards last week against Oregon gave Cade McNown four of the top eight passing performances in school history and made him the only Bruin to twice top 355.

Line: UCLA by 14.
