Talks on Bilingual Programs Scheduled

County educators will converge on Cal Lutheran University on Nov. 5 to discuss new state requirements for handling the elimination of bilingual education programs.
A controversial ballot measure, overwhelmingly approved by voters in June, aims to phase out bilingual programs. The passage of that initiative has left many educators wondering how to deal with the changes.
“It’s a very confusing time right now,” said Blas Garza, director of bilingual programs for the private Thousand Oaks university. “We’re kind of in the dark.”
The program will address college students enrolled in CLU’s teaching certificate program. Under the new proposition, the 15 students in that program face an uncertain future, Garza said.
Speaking at the event will be Cliff Rodrigues, director of Ventura County’s bilingual education program. He will present the latest state guidelines on dealing with the changes.
The discussion will take at 7 p.m. in Overton Hall in the Soiland Humanities Center.
