USC Defeats UC Irvine in Overtime

Ivan Babic and George Csaszar each scored in overtime to lift No. 1 USC over No. 2 UC Irvine, 10-7, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo game Saturday at Heritage Park.

Irvine’s Kevin Brantley scored with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the score, 7-7, and force overtime, but Babic scored with 1:17 left in the first of two three-minute overtime periods to give the Trojans the lead.

Csaszar then closed out the scoring with a soft two-point lob shot over UCI goalkeeper Genai Kerr, who came far out of the cage to attempt a steal.

In addition to Csaszar’s three goals, Babic and Peter Janov each had two goals for USC. Junior goalkeeper Richard McEvoy had eight saves for the Trojans (14-1, 4-0). UCI is 11-5, 2-1.

Brantley and Dan Klatt scored two goals each for the Anteaters, who came into the match with seven-game winning streak.

UCI’s Ryan Bailey, the conference’s leading scorer, was held to three shots and no goals.

In the Southern California College Invitational:

Concordia dominates meet--The Concordia men’s and women’s teams took first place in the local tournament, the women defending their 1997 title.

The women took the first, second, third and fifth spots with sophomore Rachel Lafady placing first in 19:25.

Sophomore Tricia Mattson was second at 19:28, freshman Renee Collins third at 19:32, and Cara Rumble finished fifth at 19:50.

The men won their first meet championship in program history. Freshman Chris Duelen won his first meet of the season in 27:57.

Sophomores Adam Helm (28:05) finished second and Chris Laman (28:13) third.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Southern California College 3, California Baptist 2--Diego Goni had two goals and Joakim Ulfuebrandy scored the game-winner for the Vanguards (3-4, 8-9)

In women’s soccer:

Concordia 1, No. 16 Southern California College 0--Yolanda Lozano scored in the 86th minute to upset the host Vanguards and record the Eagles’ first Golden State Athletic Conference victory in program history.

In Big West women’s volleyball:

Boise State 3, CS Fullerton 1--Becky Meek had 28 kills and Jeni Elson had 13 kills and 14 digs to lead the Broncos (13-8, 6-4). Cal State Fullerton (7-14, 1-9) was led by Megan Sabo and Alisa Geddes, each with 19 kills.
