The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Sunday that he is considering another run for the White House in 2000.

“I’m leaning in that direction,” the civil rights activist said on NBC-TV’s “Meet the Press” program. “The groundwork has been laid for a real serious challenge.” Jackson ran unsuccessfully in Democratic primaries for the presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988.

Jackson, who founded the civil rights organizations Rainbow Coalition and Operation PUSH (People United to Serve Humanity), said a black Democrat should be on the ballot in 2000.

“Because of our numbers, our loyalty and our public position, there should be a black on that ticket in year 2000,” he said.

But Jackson said he has not officially decided to run. “I’m not determined to enter the race, but I am determined to set the pace,” he said.
