Team Will Line Up in Red Zone Again

UCLA again will take note of homecoming by coming out of the huddle for its first offensive snap today in the zigzag serpentine formation.

“That’s not my trick play,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “That’s my trick formation.”

He has done the tribute to Red Sanders, who coached UCLA from 1949-57, in each of his previous two seasons as coach. The Bruins went through a quick run-through of the move from the huddle to the line of scrimmage as part of Friday’s practice.

Tight end Ryan Neufeld and defensive lineman Vae Tata are UCLA’s captains for the day, joining season-long choices Larry Atkins and Cade McNown. . . . Kicker Chris Sailer, bothered for several weeks by a strained groin, has shown a lot of improvement this week. “Much better,” Toledo said. “He’s feeling as good as he’s felt in a month, he told me.” . . . Kickoff for the game at Oregon State next Saturday has been set for 3:30. Television coverage is still to be determined. . . . Toledo is one of 10 finalists for the Eddie Robinson/Football Writers Assn. of America coach-of-the-year award. Among others under consideration: Mike Bellotti of Oregon State, Dick Tomey of Arizona and Larry Smith of Missouri.
