Satellite Science Center Grounded for Updates

Share

Crystal Court’s Launch Pad science center for children will close Monday for renovations and reopen Sept. 21 with fewer exhibits and free admission.

Exhibits are being transferred to the much-anticipated Discovery Science Center, which opens mid-December in Santa Ana.

“We’re looking at about a 30% decrease in size,” said Melissa V. Centeno, marketing manager for the Launch Pad and Discovery Center. “We’ve taken some of the exhibits out and they’re going to transfer them to be refurbished for the big science center.”

With Discovery Science Center’s opening, Launch Pad will assume a decreased role, Centeno said. “It will be our satellite facility.”

Still, popular exhibits, including a bubble-making station, a walk-in kaleidoscope and Morphing Station, will survive the renovations.

After Launch Pad reopens at the end of this month, admission will be free. Admission had been $5 a child. The affiliated Science Store will remain open during renovations. Launch Pad will close for good in January 2000, when the lease expires.

Crystal Court is across from South Coast Plaza at 3333 Bear St. Launch Pad is on the third floor. Information: (714) 546-2061.
