Pierce Carnival May Become a Tradition

Seen all the summer movies and looking for some old-fashioned fun? Pierce College’s carnival, which opened Thursday, may solve the Labor Day doldrums.

Organized by Pierce’s athletic department, the first-ever event features more than 30 rides, live entertainment, game and craft booths, and dozens of food vendors, said Ina Geller Yates, public information officer at the community college.

“It’s our first successful attempt at an old-fashioned carnival,” Yates said. “El Nino spoiled our first attempt last winter, so we planned it for a time when the weather would be right and it is, as long as you can stand the hot weather.”

All proceeds will benefit Pierce College, Yates said. If the carnival is successful, she said, it could become a Labor Day tradition.

“Every time we do something new, we kind of cross our fingers and hold our breaths,” Yates said.

Carnival hours are 3 p.m. to midnight today, noon to midnight Saturday and Sunday, and noon to 11 p.m. Monday.
