Garity’s Family History

So the young actor Troy Garity says his father, Tom Hayden, “literally risked his life to make . . . the world a better place for me to grow up in” (“Like Father, Like Actor,” by Paul Iorio, Sept. 1).

I would suggest that Mr. Garity take a trip to the nation’s capital and visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The men and women on that wall did more than risk their lives, they lost their lives for their country trying to make a better world.

In some countries, his father and mother, Jane Fonda, would have stood trial as traitors.

Troy Garity’s last name is a Hayden family name. After arriving from County Monaghan, they settled in Sullivan, Wis., where eventually Sylvester Garity and my great-aunt, Emma McGee, would be married by my great-uncle, Father John Weinhoff.
