Camarillo Family Home

Re “Landmark Decision: Descendants of City Founder Reluctantly Ready to Leave Camarillo Family Home,” Aug. 31.

I read with dismay that the city of Camarillo has finally coerced the Camarillo house from the Camarillo family. After all this family has given to the city, it just wasn’t enough. It had to have the family home too.

The assistant city manager told me that the house needed to be preserved for the public. How nice.

The city has actively blocked the Camarillo family from selling any property within the city or within the city’s sphere of influence for years. Camarillo actively blocked the sale of part of the family’s property in the Santa Rosa Valley because the family would not turn over the house to the city. Camarillo would not rezone the property surrounding the house to allow it to be sold without getting the house in return. At the same time, the city happily rezoned land for almost any developer who came calling.

The assistant city manager said that the Camarillo family had a choice in turning over the family home. Did they?
