Hurricane May Go Out With a Sprinkle

Hurricane Isis may have run aground over Baja California, but the system that brought a series of freakish lightning storms to Southern California last week may have a lingering effect on weather today and Tuesday, forecasters said.

“I can’t rule out a chance for a late afternoon shower or a sprinkle, in part due to the aftereffects of Hurricane Isis, which kicked up a lot of residual moisture before it died,” said Kevin Stenson, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecast information to The Times.

Otherwise, the forecast for today and Tuesday in the Valley is for low clouds and fog in the morning, giving way to partial clearing in the afternoon, Stenson said.

“There’s an upper level of low pressure that’s keeping Southern California in a hazy state,” Stenson said.

The afternoon high today in Chatsworth is expected to be 95 degrees, with slightly lower temperatures in Woodland Hills, Van Nuys and Burbank.

Similar temperatures are expected Tuesday.

Adding discomfort to the heat will be higher than normal humidity, up to 65%, Stenson said.

Morning lows for today and Tuesday in the Valley are expected to be in the upper 60s.

The ultraviolet index for today at noon, when the sun’s rays are most direct, is seven, a high level, Stenson said. People with fair skin could begin to burn within eight minutes.

A large trough of low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska is expected to bring cooler temperatures and winds blowing at speeds of 10 to 20 mph Wednesday and Thursday, Stenson said. Both days, afternoon highs are expected to be in the low to mid-80s, following morning lows in the mid- to upper 60s.

On Friday, the low pressure is expected to be replaced by a high pressure system, resulting in higher afternoon temperatures, he said.
