Two new schools will open Thursday--Las Flores Elementary School and Berenice Ayer Middle School--in one of the fastest-growing districts in the county.
Enrollment in the Capistrano Unified School District is expected to rise by about 2,000 from last year, to more than 40,100 students, said David A. Doomey, assistant superintendent in facilities planning.
“We’re very excited to be finally opening,” said Cheryl Baughn, principal of Berenice Ayer Middle School in San Clemente, which will open for 795 students in grades six to nine.
The middle school was named after the late Berenice Ayer, the first teacher to be hired in the district.
The district’s other new school is Las Flores Elementary, opening with 379 youngsters in the new community south of Coto de Caza and east of Mission Viejo.
