More Candidates Sought for Police Chief Post

The city is seeking additional candidates for the job of police chief because so few have applied so far.

City officials said that while 140 people have applied for the assistant city manager’s position, only 10 candidates have applied for police chief.

West Covina City Councilman Michael Touhey said the city has began recruiting additional candidates. The chief’s job pays between $95,000 and $120,000.

“The aggressive nature of our police union here is making it tough,” Touhey said. Union representatives have threatened to recall City Council members during an ongoing contract dispute.

The city has been without a permanent police chief since John Distelrath was fired earlier this year over charges of misconduct.
