Police are seeking help in solving the death of a 65-year-old Long Beach woman who died a day after suffering a head injury during a robbery at her home.

Ida Carter died Wednesday at Lakewood Regional Hospital, said Long Beach Police Cpl. Harry Erickson. Police are searching for a man who robbed and assaulted Carter and her son at her home in the 6600 block of Orizaba Avenue just after midnight Tuesday, Erickson said.

Police did not release a description of the suspect or an explanation of how he got into the house.

Immediately after the attack, both victims appeared unhurt, but Carter went to a hospital and was observed and released, he said. On Wednesday morning, however, she felt ill and went to Lakewood Regional Hospital, Erickson said. By the time she arrived, she was in cardiac arrest. Doctors were unable to save her and she was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m.

Police are awaiting an autopsy’s results to determine whether the assault contributed to Carter’s death. Until then, detectives are treating the incident as a possible homicide.

Police urged anyone with information to call Dets. Rich Conant or Steve Smith at (562) 570-7244.
