Oxnard police arrested a man on suspicion of auto theft after authorities caught him replacing a license plate on a stolen Volkswagen, authorities said Friday.

Authorities said a neighbor spotted a man in the 900 block of Berkshire Place removing a license plate and replacing it with another Thursday night.

Officers found David Michael Collier, 23, of Moorpark adjusting the license plate on a white Golf Volkswagen.

The Volkswagen was stolen from Los Angeles, police said. A stolen checkbook and credit card were also discovered in the car, police said.

Authorities said Collier had four misdemeanor warrants out for his arrest for unrelated narcotics and probation violation charges.

Collier was arrested on several counts, including possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle tampering, forgery and possession of stolen property.
